The Don’s Farm Supply (DFS) story began
in December of 1970 when Don and Doris Kier decided
to get into the feed business. DFS started out
as a Kent Feed dealership in an old block building
known as the 7-UP warehouse. With a reputation
for strong customer service and innovativeness,
Don Kier was setting the stage to forever change
the landscape of the Northwest Iowa feed industry.
The 1970’s proved to be a decade of major
changes and rapid growth. Mixing equipment was
soon added, entering in the complete feed business.
In 1977 a high volume grind and mix mill was
built and the company began formulating their
own diets. Soon after a small pellet line was
added and quickly found itself competing with
some major feed companies with our own Nutra
Mix brand name.
In 1992 Don and Doris Kier had retired and
had passed the business on to the family. Just
a short seven years later DFS was making 60,000
plus tons and by 1998 tonnage had reached 139,000
tons bringing the mill to 120% capacity. Pressing
against a challenge, DFS began building a new
mill with a capacity of 400,000 tons.
DFS
has been determined to improve its posture as
a high quality feed manufacturer. In spring
of 2001, DFS, Inc. became the first feed manufacturer
in the United States to become ISO certified.
DFS was the first in this area to have its mill
audited by a Statistical Process Control auditor
to test the accuracy of both mills. DFS willingly
holds itself to the highest standards in quality
and throughout the business.
If there is one thing that is most important
is that DFS has 80 plus dedicated employees serving
customers of the DFS system. In 1991 Dave Kier
wrote a mission statement that reads “It
is the desire of DFS, Inc. to be an indispensable
ally to producers, regardless of their size,
honoring God in all that we do.” Daily
we ask ourselves how we can better serve our
customers, and each other, all the while bringing
honor to our God.
